News — Glagolitic script

For centuries the Croatian people used the Glagolitic script before the rest of Catholic Europe and were the only Nation to do so with the permission of  St Pope Innocent IV (in 1248) & the Vatican.  They used this alphabet as their language, in scripture, on tablets and to pray to God in their own language. Pre Latin, liturgical words amongst others were written and printed in this script, thus making the Croatian language and it's allowance to be one of the only people to use the script a very special meaning for the people of this country. The Croatian language and Glagolitic script became a cultural treasure for Croatians and is seen in many areas around Croatia in sculptures, ancient tablets, cross work and is found in a very important monument, a stone tablet ("Bascanska ploca") dating back to the 11th century, is found in the church of St. Lucy near the town of Baska on the Island of Krk. It contains around 400 Glagolitic characters, of which particular importance lies in the 3 words carved into this stone, which are ZVONIMIR , The Croatian King. This piece of historical information confirms the Royal Kingdom during this time and is a crucial element in Croatia's historical artifacts and glory.

Glagolitic inscriptions carved in stone remain special to this day as they exist only on Croatian soil, and nowhere else. A very old text called the Croatian Chronicle written in the Glagolitic script represents the earliest known historiographical work about Croats and the earliest known literary text in Croatian the language.

Our bracelet range predominantly showcases the Glagolitic rope work through many designs and my amazing friend who is also our star designer Mary, has cleverly utilised Glagolitic script throughout our clothing and even in some of our merchandise. Mary is the talent behind most of our Glagolitic designs and we commend her for her originality and amazing creative design work nailing every brief given to her on Ruzo projects.
